Why it works
Events (a dinner, a meeting, a party) use ser for their location.
La cena fue en Malasaña. But: el restaurante estaba en Malasaña.
Rule of thumb: if it HAPPENS, use ser. If it SITS somewhere, use estar.

the dinner was in Malasaña
Treats the dinner like an object sitting there. A dinner happens, so ser: fue en Malasaña.
