Why it works
Estar + participle describes a result: la puerta estaba cerrada.
Ser + participle would be the action itself (fue cerrada = someone closed it).
Why not fue
la puerta fue cerrada
the door was closed
Reports the act of closing it. Estaba cerrada is how you found it.
