Lesson 33 · Mood

  1. Teach

  2. Fill it in 5

  3. Say it 3

  4. Review 4

What you would do

si tuviera, iría

if I had, I would go· tap the form for the whole table

Say these out loud

Why it works

For something untrue right now: si + imperfect subjunctive, then the conditional.

Build the form from the ellos preterite: tuvieron gives tuviera, hicieron gives hiciera.

Si never takes the conditional. Si tendría does not exist.

Why not si tendría

si tendría tiempo, lo haría

if I would have time, I would do it

A very common English-speaker error. The would goes in the second half only.

In a full sentence

  • Si tuviera tiempo y pudiera, iría al gimnasio después del trabajo.

If I had time and could, I would go to the gym after work.

It describes an unreal condition in the present.

  • Si mi jefe fuera más flexible, iría menos a la oficina.

If my boss were more flexible, I would go to the office less.

Use imperfect subjunctive after si for an unreal present situation.

  • Si supiera la respuesta, iría tranquilo a la entrevista.

If I knew the answer, I would go calmly to the interview.

The speaker does not know the answer now.

  • Si estuviera libre, iría de tapas con mis amigos.

If I were free, I would go for tapas with my friends.

Being free is an imagined condition, not a current fact.
