What someone wanted you to do
quería que vinieras
Say these out loud
Why it works
Quiero que vengas, in the past. A past main verb drags the second verb back too.
Present with present, past with past. The two halves must match.
Why not quería que vengas
quería que vengas a la reunión
he wanted you to come to the meeting
Mixes a past want with a present subjunctive. Spanish keeps both in the past.
In a full sentence
My boss wanted me to fix the error before the deployment.
The past wish requires the imperfect subjunctive.
Yesterday he told me to call the landlord about the damp.
A past instruction uses the imperfect subjunctive after que.
I wanted him to come to El Retiro on Sunday.
The wanting happened in the past.
I told her to update the bank app.
A past telling verb pulls the imperfect subjunctive.
