The softest way to ask

quisiera

I would like· tap the form for the whole table

Say these out loud

Why it works

Quisiera is politer than quiero and politer than querría. Use it with strangers.

Ojalá always takes the subjunctive: ojalá pudiera, ojalá fuera verdad.

Me gustaría que + imperfect subjunctive for a wish about someone else.

Why not quiero

quiero hablar con el responsable

I want to speak to the person in charge

Correct, but blunt at a counter or on the phone. Quisiera does the same job gently.

In a full sentence

I would like to be able to work from home on Friday.

Quisiera makes a request sound especially gentle.

  • Quisiera que el despliegue fuera más rápido.

I would like the deployment to be faster.

Use quisiera to soften what you would prefer.

  • Quisiera que mi jefe pudiera revisar esta propuesta.

I would like my boss to be able to review this proposal.

Quisiera introduces a polite wish about someone else.

  • Quisiera que la cita médica fuera por la mañana.

I would like the doctor’s appointment to be in the morning.

Quisiera is a very soft way to state a preference.
