Why it works

Volver a + infinitive is the normal way to say again.

Otra vez is not wrong, but volver a is what you will hear.

Volver keeps the tense: vuelvo a intentarlo, volví a intentarlo.

Why not falló otra vez

el despliegue falló otra vez

Perfectly fine, just flatter. Volvió a fallar carries the exasperation.
