Telling people what was said

dijo que iba a…

he said he was going to…· tap the form for the whole table

Say these out loud

Why it works

Dijo que pulls everything after it one step back.

Voy becomes iba, he hecho becomes había hecho, hice becomes había hecho.

Iré can become iba a or iría — both are heard, so do not agonise over that one.

For a yes/no question use si: me preguntó si había terminado.

Why not dijo que va

dijo que va a desplegarlo

he said that he is going to deploy it

Heard in speech, but it keeps the present under a past verb. The clean form steps back to iba.

In a full sentence

  • Mi jefe dijo que iba a hacer cambios hoy.

My boss said he was going to make changes today.

The planned action is viewed from the past.

  • Ella dijo que iba a ir a la oficina.

She said she was going to go to the office.

The future plan shifts back after dijo.

  • El casero dijo que iba a hacer la reparación.

The landlord said he was going to do the repair.

The repair was still planned when he spoke.
